Meet the boys of the Star's Rest Band! All but one of the band are wild born mustangs, and the only domestic horse is a Rocky Mountain cross who was born and raised in the mountains north of us. Four of the band are roughly the same age, born in 2000, with Llego being the youngster of the group. Each one comes from a different area of the west and each has been gelded, making them the ideal permanent bachelor band. We have intentionally not added mares to the group to avoid the disruption that would naturally follow.
The Star's Rest Band forms as much of a natural herd group as is possible in a domestic situation. The mustang members were all wild up until the age of two or later, which gave them plenty of time to develop as truly functional horses with complete herd socialization. When we began to act and relate to them as herd members instead of dominators, it was easy for them to let go of their fears of previous human encounters and to accept us as part of the band. This transition has been most difficult for our domestic horse, Besol, who had been very well trained to fear people. They live a natural life without most of the trappings of domestic horses...they have their freedom and there are no barns, no blankets and especially no shoes.
Please select the name link under each photo to read about that band member. We hope to add video clips soon that will help to show each horse's personality and behavior.
