Griton was born in 2000 in the Stewart Creek HMA in Wyoming. He is most likely descended from cavalry remount stock that was turned out when the military stopped using horses. At 15.1HH, he is typical in size and build to the horses bred at that time to fit the old McClelland cavalry saddles. Griton is intelligent, curious and more than anything else, playful.
Griton came to us showing all of the behaviors of a bully. Because of the way he ran the other horses around, most people would assume he was the dominant horse, the 'Herd Boss', and that his behavior was what should be emulated. The people who believe that would be very wrong. Griton was not a 'boss', he was just bossy. Within a very short time, he fell under Corazon's charm and began to quickly learn that disruptive behavior meant that he was excluded. To the credit of his intelligence and adaptability, Griton has learned to
For Griton the Prankster, any opportunity to play with any member of the herd is wonderful and taken with enthusiasm.
modify his excessive aggression in order to stay close to Corazon. Instead, he has become 'The Police', keeping order when needed without ever doing harm. Griton answers only to Corazon and keeps the peace by pushing out those who are disturbing it.
The other side of Griton's personality is perhaps even more annoying to the peace of the herd. That side is known as 'The Prankster', since he can't seem to leave anyone alone for long and is always watching for a chance to play. Two summers ago, he pulled most of Corazon's tail out in repeated efforts to get Corazon to chase him. Fortunately for Corazon, Griton gave up on that activity and Corazon is finally growing out a decent tail again. When an opportunity to play
arrives, Griton takes it regardless of
who the other horse is.

In spite of his aggressive appearance here, Griton means no real harm and the others know it. His mouth may be open, but his ears are not flat back and he is relaxed through his body. The others are cooperating by moving, but not with any real fear or concern and Corazon's tail flip indicates his complete disregard. This is typical of Griton the Police when he decides to break up a disagreement among the others.
